Dear Families,
Another fortnight has passed quickly. I visited Prep B this week and saw the students learning about odd and even numbers. They were concentrating very hard on learning this concept and were demonstrating a range of number skills.
Students have been enjoying using the new soccer goals in our playground. Earlier this week I received some very compelling writing from some Year 3 and 4 students, putting forward their case that they do not get an opportunity to use the goals. In response to this today I met with Prep – Year 6 students to talk about how we can share the soccer goals. I asked for a show of hands of who had been able to use the goals, then another show of hands of who would like to use the goals but had not yet had a chance. This told me that we need a solution to provide fair access.
At recess students came to me with their ‘groups’ who would like to use the goals. From this I will develop a roster so everyone can share the goals and have fun at recess and lunch times.
A reminder that tomorrow (Friday 6 June) is Statewide Moderation Day and that there is no school for students. Monday 9 June is also a public holiday so a lovely long weekend for families!
Next week from Tuesday to Thursday I will on an External Review Panel at another school. Mrs Bec Jubb will be acting principal in my absence.
Regards
Anne Reeves
Principal

Prep A's Recounts of their MDC Visit
This term in Prep A we have been focusing on learning how to use sentences to write a recount. We have been working to remember a capital letter at the beginning, finger spaces between our words and full stops at the end of each sentence. We know that a recount is retelling something that we have already done and are including, when, where, who, what and why. Please find some of our wonderful recounts from our recent excursion to the Marine Discovery Centre below. We hope you love our writing and illustrations.

Year 6 Camp Medications
The camp medications can be brought into the office during business hours up to and including Tuesday 17 June (the week before camp).
Medications need to be brought in by an adult who will sign a dosage form to be placed with the medicine. The medication will also be checked against the Forms A &/or B previously provided. Medications will need to be in blister packs and in original pharmacy boxes. Any queries, please email Mrs. Helen Rothwell.
Thank you to the families who have already provided their child’s medication.
All Schools Cross Country, Symmons Plains - Volunteers Needed
This event is on Tuesday 17 June. At this stage we have two parent volunteers. We require six more parents to volunteer to attend with us to support students getting to the start line, collecting them from the finish line, supervising toilet visits and general supervision.
If we do not receive enough volunteers we will be unable to attend this event as a school, so please check you calendar to see if you can help out. The bus will be leaving at 8:00am and returning at approximately 4:00pm.
If you can help out please email me on anne.reeves@decyp.tas.gov.au
Thank you
Anne Reeves
On Thursday 3 July, Year 5 and Year 6 bands will be performing in the hall at 2:00pm. All families are welcome to attend this performance. This will be the Year 5 students first public performance so please come along and give them your support.
The Early Childhood choir will also be performing. They will be the first act at this assembly. Again, this will be their first public performance so please come along and lend your support.
Our cross-country team participated in the Interschool Cross Country event at Bayview College on Tuesday. The team came second overall with some great performances from individuals and teams. They returned to school with a swag of pennants! We will hear more from the students in the next newsletter. Thanks to dad Mark for sending through some photos, we will include them in the next newsletter with the students reflections. Any other parents who attended and have some photos to share, please email to sarah.ward@decyp.tas.gov.au by Monday 16 June.
With reading being a priority at South Hobart Primary School we have decided as a school to complete the Premier's Reading Challenge this year.
Every year, thousands of schools across Tasmania participate in this challenge. The challenge encourages personal reading goals over 10 weeks, embracing diverse formats, including recommended books.
On Thursday 12 June the whole school will receive a reading log to write down the books they have read (see below). If you fill in your log and would like another, please see Mrs Corney or Miss McGruther.
The challenge starts on Monday 16 June and goes till 24 August.
If you would like to know more here is the link to the web site:
Happy reading
There has been some confusion about the gates to the school grounds. The Weld Street and Anglesea Street gates are always open, except for between 8:15am – 8:30am and again between 9:00am and 2:45pm. The reason the gates are locked at this time is because staff do not take duty of care of students until 8:30am. Students who are not at Before School Care should not be in the grounds before 8:30am.
The remainder of the time the gates are open so the grounds can be used by the community.
The gate along the rivulet track is locked at 3:30pm each afternoon. This is not unlocked outside of drop off and pick up times, as it has been left open after hours, allowing wallabies into the playground. Wallabies leave quite a mess which gets walked into classrooms and other learning areas.
At times our EFAs and grounds staff have been spoken to disrespectfully about the gates. If you have any queries about this, please contact me to discuss.
This will be Wednesday 18 June at 1:50pm in the hall. Due to the varied activities in which the students have been participating the sharing will be a combination of a sharing style assembly and open classrooms. We will start in the hall where we will enjoy dance, guitar, drama and sport. Other activities; knitting, film-making, writing, perspective drawing and robotics will provide an outline of what they have been up to. After the sharing in the hall, families will then have the opportunity to go to the classrooms where these options were held and have a close look at students’ work.
While the classes involved in options are 4/5A, 5A, 5B, 5/6A, 6A and 6B, parents of children from other classes are welcome to attend.
On Monday, June 30th, students participating in the Festival of Voices Young Tasmania Sings concert will head to the Stanley Burbury Theatre in Sandy Bay for their first combined rehearsal with guest conductor Annie Kwok.
On Wednesday, July 2nd, they will rehearse at City Hall, the venue for the concert at 7:00 PM that evening.
Doors will open at 6:15 PM, and students should go directly to their positions on stage. All choristers must be assembled on stage by 6:45 PM.
I am very proud of the work our students have done so far in preparing for this concert and I look forward to seeing them perform.
Peter Eddleston.
This is a public event and families are welcome to attend. Tickets for the concert can be purchased from the festival of voices website. https://tickets.festivalofvoices.com/event/6152:334/6152:465/
