Extra-Curricular Activity - Irish Dancing
Regional Irish dance Championship Sa/NT/Tas
On the 23rd and 24th of August, Hazel, Eliza, Bronte and Maisie all competed at the regional oireachtas (a large official competition) for Irish dance for scoil rince ni Kelly which means ‘Kelly school of Irish dance’ in Irish. We competed against NT and SA. There are many different types of dances you can do (Hornpipe, Jig, Reel). There are also different kinds of shoes (hard shoes and soft shoes) that you were for each dance(Reel- soft, Hornpipe- Hard, Jig- Hard or soft)
Solos
Hazel, Eliza and Maisie all did solos. Hazel and Eliza competed against each other and 16 other competitors.
Maisie also did solos for the first time and was very brave going on stage. She did very well and we were proud of her. The dancers wear numbers so the judge knows who they are and can score fairly and correctly.
Teams
Bronte, Maisie, Eliza and Hazel did teams too. Teams dancing is where you dance in a group from your school doing different types of dances. Our teams were very successful and, throughout the school, we came home with 14 first place trophies!!
Figure
A figure dance is when you perform a dance which is choreographed by your teacher. You dance following a story about Irish fairy tales, folklore or myths in a group of around 10 people. We won our junior figure which was about the three sisters of Dingle Bay and was our second time doing it on stage. The seniors also won their figure which was about Michael Flatley (a famous Irish dancer)
We had to dance non-stop for the two days, but we all danced our best and it was really fun. It was like a big holiday with all our friends!! (Even though we had to wake up at 4:30 to put a massive bun wig and red lipstick on!!)We definitely recommend Scoil Rince Ni Kelly as a dance studio. It’s fun, we work hard, and we’re all like family❤️
